What Is 2 Samuel 6 About?

In this chapter, David brings the ark of the covenant to Jerusalem, a significant step in making the city not just the political capital but the spiritual heart of Israel. However, the journey is marked by both tragedy and triumph.

When the ark is initially transported improperly on a cart, Uzzah touches it to steady it and is struck down by God. This moment shocks David, who pauses the procession and places the ark in the house of Obed-Edom. While there, the Lord blesses Obed-Edom’s household, and David, encouraged by this, resumes the journey… this time with proper reverence and worship.

As the ark enters the city, David dances before the Lord with all his might, wearing a linen ephod. His uninhibited worship is met with disdain by Michal, Saul’s daughter, who criticizes him. David responds that he will become even more undignified in his worship because it’s for the Lord.

This chapter highlights the seriousness of God’s holiness, the importance of joyful and reverent worship, and the difference between human pride and godly humility.

Key Verse

“David said to Michal, ‘It was before the Lord, who chose me rather than your father or anyone from his house when he appointed me ruler over the Lord’s people Israel—I will celebrate before the Lord. I will become even more undignified than this, and I will be humiliated in my own eyes. But by these slave girls you spoke of, I will be held in honor.’”—2 Samuel 6:21-22 (NIV)

Practical Takeaway

Worship is not about appearances or performance… it’s about the posture of our hearts. This chapter reminds us that God is holy and must be approached with reverence, but He also invites us into joy-filled, wholehearted praise. Don’t let the fear of others’ opinions rob you of passionate devotion to God.
