“If you are filled with light, with no dark corners, then your whole life will be radiant, as though a floodlight were filling you with light.”—Luke 11:36 (NLT)

Over the last two days, we’ve explored the idea of the light of Christ. First, we unpacked what Jesus meant when He said that He was the light of the world; then we examined how our lives can shine His light into a world full of darkness. Today, we’re going to discover the end result of living in the light of Christ and living out the light of Christ. 

Have you ever seen a floodlight? These kinds of lights are used in stadiums and fields, parks, parking lots, roads, and big front yards to light up a huge, vast area. They provide light that shines well beyond their surface area and extends out in all directions. 

The original Greek word (lychnos) actually speaks of a portable light, one that moves where you move and illuminates the area around you wherever you take it. Try to imagine this for one minute: a portable floodlight. That’s a crazy level of brightness to carry around with you! But that’s the result of the light of Christ in us shining brightly through us. 

When we “walk in the light, as he is in the light . . . and the blood of Jesus, his Son, purifies us from all sin” (1 John 1:7 NIV), there is no telling how far our light can extend. There is no limit to how many people the Lord can reach through us. In Matthew 5:15 (NLT), Jesus says, “No one lights a lamp and then puts it under a basket. Instead, a lamp is placed on a stand, where it gives light to everyone in the house.” 

Jesus lit the lamp, He ignited the flame of His grace and glory in us, and if we’re faithful to “Live clean, innocent lives as children of God” (Philippians 2:15 NLT), then He is faithful to do a work in and through us that is above and beyond anything we could ever ask, think, or imagine. 

Here’s the challenge I want to leave you with regarding this trilogy of light devotionals: When you shine bright, people will come from far and wide. Some will come to try to snuff out your light; others will come to inquire about your light. You must be prepared to address both. You must be ready to endure the persecution and embrace the seeking.
