“May He grant you according to your heart’s desire, and fulfill all your purpose.”—Psalm 20:4 (NKJV)

At age nine, I gave this a shot:

“Star light, star bright;
First star I see tonight.
I wish I may, I wish I might;
Have this wish I wish tonight.”

I wished for a pony, but I never got a pony. Hey, it was worth a try.

Forty years later, I still stare up at the stars, but my wishes have become prayers, and my prayers hold less whimsy. It’s because while time changed my girlish desires, Jesus changed my perspective. Happiness and the purpose within it became rooted in Christ. 

The above verse couples nicely with Psalm 37:4 (NKJV), which says, “Delight yourself also in the Lord, and He shall give you the desires of your heart.” Hand in hand, they balance what we desire with what God desires—and once laced together, they snugly fit. 
But what is it that God desires? Above all, our love. Yet, Micah would tell us the Lord also desires we live justly, love mercy, and walk humbly with our God (Micah 6:8). That, in and of itself, would please God very much. 

This is where the snug fit begins—in the realization that Jesus did all these things: He lived a just life, He showed compassion to people, and He was a meek and humble servant of God. The words He uttered, “Not My will, but Yours, be done” (Luke 22:42) reveal a Man who desired what the Father desired; a Man with a purpose to save the world. When we consider what He endured to do this, we should respond with an immense amount of gratitude and love. And when we love someone, our desire is to give that person what that person wants. But what does God desire?

That’s for you to discover because God’s purpose for each of us is different. But the Holy Spirit will let you know. Those moments alone with Jesus, delighting in Him, will evoke a notion from the Spirit to do God’s desire. In love, you will respond. Because Jesus proclaimed, “If you abide in Me, and My words abide in you, you will ask what you desire, and it shall be done for you. (John 15:7 NKJV). 
God’s desire and our desire are intricately laced together to fit each person’s specific purpose. For King David, it was victory in battle; for Jesus it was to take away the sins of the world.  What is it for you? Ask Him. Delight in Him. And “may He grant you according to your heart’s desire, and fulfill all your purpose.”

DIG: What does God desire above all other things? What does Micah say God desires? Read Micah 6:8 and meditate on this Word from the Lord. 

DISCOVER: Has God shown you what your purpose is? Do you delight in Him? What do you truly desire? Are your desires laced with God’s? Ask yourself these questions and wait for His response.

DO: Once your purpose is revealed, earnestly do what the Lord has required of you knowing that He has equipped you for this service in the power and strength of Jesus.
