Identity: Who We Are In Christ
Do you know what seems like a fun job? Naming medicines. Who came up with Claritin or Tylenol or Flonase? This got me about a key question: Who has the right to name something? Think about the things in your life. Who has the true right to label those things? Well, there are two categories of people:
- Creators: How many of you have a label on the back of your shirt, on the tag? How many of you have a label on the front of your shirt? Whenever someone creates something, when they design, build, mold, or manufacture it, they always put a label on it. And that’s expected. We expect there to be a label, an identifier that lets you know where it came from and who made it. The same is true of people. We all have names that were given to us by the people who made us, our parents.
- Purchasers: When you were a kid and you got a new backpack or lunchbox, what’s the first thing your parents told you to do? Write your name in it. When you get a new book, what’s the first thing you should do? Write your name in it. When you buy a pet, one of the first things people usually do is give it a name. Some people name their cars after buying them. When you purchase something, you have the right to label it.
- Psalm 100:3 (NIV): “It is he who made us, and we are his.”
- Psalm 119:73 (NIV): “Your hands made me and formed me.”
- Psalm 139:13 (NIV): “For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother’s womb.”
