Scripture Guide

2 Timothy 4:1-5

THIS WEEK’S SCRIPTURE:

“In the presence of God and of Christ Jesus, who will judge the living and the dead, and in view of his appearing and his kingdom, I give you this charge: Preach the word; be prepared in season and out of season; correct, rebuke and encourage—with great patience and careful instruction. For the time will come when people will not put up with sound doctrine. Instead, to suit their own desires, they will gather around them a great number of teachers to say what their itching ears want to hear. They will turn their ears away from the truth and turn aside to myths. But you, keep your head in all situations, endure hardship, do the work of an evangelist, discharge all the duties of your ministry.”—2 Timothy 4:1–5 (NIV)

In this section of Paul’s letter to Timothy, the tone shifts from encouragement to urgency. Paul’s nearing the end of his life, and he knows it. So when he says, “In the presence of God and of Christ Jesus, . . . I give you this charge,” he’s not exaggerating. He’s framing Timothy’s responsibility in light of eternity.

What is the charge? To preach the word! Don’t adjust it., don’t soften it, and don’t reshape it depending on the audience. Simply, preach it.

Paul assumes there’ll be resistance. He says a time is coming when people won’t put up with sound doctrine. Instead, they’ll gather teachers who tell them what they want to hear. The issue isn’t a lack of spirituality—it’s a preference for comfort over truth. “Itching ears” suggests a desire to be affirmed, not corrected.

So Timothy’s job is to be steady in faithfulness; to be prepared, whether it’s convenient or inconvenient; to correct, rebuke, and encourage, but to do it patiently. The truth isn’t meant to be harsh or careless; it requires careful instruction and endurance.

Paul closes this charge with four simple directives: keep your head, endure hardship, do the work, and fulfill your ministry. The emphasis is clear. Faithfulness matters more than popularity, clarity matters more than approval, and ministry is something to be completed, not casually attempted.

Read this week’s Scripture in addition to these supporting Scriptures: Jeremiah 23:28–29; Acts 20:26–27; 1 Peter 5:2–3; 2 Timothy 2:15

Study Questions:

  • Why does Paul frame this charge “in the presence of God and Christ Jesus”?
  • What does it mean to preach the word “in season and out of season”?
  • How can correction and encouragement exist together?
  • What does “itching ears” suggest about human nature?
  • What would it look like to “fulfill your ministry” in your current season?

Meditate on this week’s passage and ask yourself these questions.

  • What stuck out to me through this passage?
  • What’s God showing me?
  • What truth can I take with me into today?

God’s Word invites transformation. Today’s about putting what you’ve learned into practice.

  • Based on what I just learned about God, what habits, attitudes, or changes do I need to make?
  • What can I take away from this passage and apply to my life?
  • Where am I tempted to prioritize comfort over truth?
  • Am I patient and careful when speaking the truth, or am I reactive and rushed?

Application Challenge:
Encourage someone in truth this week. Have a conversation where you speak Scripture into someone’s life—not your opinion, but God’s Word. Do it patiently, carefully, and with love. Faithfulness to truth isn’t only for pastors; it’s part of everyday discipleship.

Scripture to Pray:
“Let the message of Christ dwell among you richly as you teach and admonish one another with all wisdom through psalms, hymns, and songs from the Spirit, singing to God with gratitude in your hearts.”—Colossians 3:16 (NIV)

Guided Prayer:
Lord, thank You for Your Word. Help me to value truth more than comfort. Teach me to handle it carefully and patiently. Keep my mind clear when culture pulls in different directions. Give me endurance when faithfulness feels difficult. Help me to fulfill what You’ve entrusted to me. Amen.

Looking back on this week’s Scripture, remember: Faithfulness matters more than popularity.

  • What’s one way I can enjoy God’s presence through rest, relationship, or serving others?
  • What blessings can I thank God for as I reflect on this week?

This weekend, set aside intentional time to go to church, do something you love with Jesus, and connect with others.
