What’s Your Track Record?

And you know in all your hearts and in all your souls that not one thing has failed of all the good things which the Lord your God spoke concerning you. All have come to pass for you; not one word of them has failed.”—Joshua 23:14 (NKJV)

How important is a person’s track record to you?

What if a new acquaintance makes plans to meet up with you for lunch, but cancels that morning due to an unexpected emergency? You’d probably understand and reschedule. But what if they did the same exact thing a second time? Or a third, fourth, or fifth time? What if you lose count how many times they broke plans with you?

Regardless of how understanding you are, at some point you’re going to take their track record into account. Given the pattern, you’re going to lose confidence in their word and you’ll eventually tune them out. Such is the power and the importance of a person’s track record—it’s a window into one’s character.

One of Joshua’s last words to the children of Israel was to remind them of God’s track record towards them. None of them could say God didn’t fulfill every promise He’d ever made to them. Not one word of His failed in all the time He carried them out of Egypt, over the Jordan, and through the maze of dangers in the Promised Land.

This was extremely important because a track record is an insight into one’s character. In God’s case, the track record of His actions revealed an unwavering and unshakable faithfulness towards them. This was something never to be forgotten because they would need to trust in God’s faithfulness many times over in their future.

So it is with us! All trials and challenges will never cease during our time here on earth to a point that will make us no longer need God’s faithfulness to protect or provide for us. As long as we’re in this life, we will always need something greater than ourselves and this world to lean on, and that something is the sense that God will be faithful to take care of us.

It would be frightening if God’s track record was similar to someone who only occasionally kept their word or even a person who was generally reliable. But as Joshua said, God has a perfect track record of faithfulness towards His people. He never fails, cancels, forgets, or does anything other than what He promises to do. Which means, the thing most needed is also the thing most proven—God’s faithfulness!
