Unity Makes Us Worth of Our Calling

“As a prisoner for the Lord, then, I urge you to live a life worthy of the calling you have received. Be completely humble and gentle; be patient, bearing with one another in love. Make every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace. There is one body and one Spirit, just as you were called to one hope when you were called; one Lord, one faith, one baptism; one God and Father of all, who is over all and through all and in all.”—Ephesians 4:1–6 (NIV)
Have you ever desired so badly to live up to something? Maybe, like Mulan or Ken Griffey Jr., you have a family legacy to uphold. Maybe you stepped into the role of a beloved figure who moved on and you have big shoes to fill. Or maybe you simply have extremely high expectations for yourself. Whatever the case, we often walk around with a desire to live a life that’s worthy of something or someone.
In today’s passage, Paul exhorts those who are bound to God by the gospel to “live a life worthy of the calling [they] have received.” Now, I want to point out that the calling we’re talking about isn’t referring to some specific vocation or work. It’s not talking about a pastoral or career calling. Joseph Barnes explained it this way: “This word properly means ‘an invitation’—as to a banquet. Hence, it means that divine invitation by which Christians are introduced into the privileges of the gospel.” It’s meant as a general gospel calling of the faithful to holy living.
So, what does that look like? Paul gives us some qualities:
- Humble
- Gentle
- Patient
- Perseverant
- Peacemaker
- Having a spirit of unity
